Aboriginal Communities

First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities have unique rights in Canada. Aboriginal and Treaty rights are in many cases still being defined in the courts because of historical treaty misunderstandings, unsettled land claims and disputes over jurisdiction on lands that have been traditionally used by Aboriginal peoples.

Pipeline operators have a good track record of working directly with Aboriginal communities to address their concerns about the impact of pipeline construction and operations on Aboriginal lands and traditional way of life, as well as the social health and economic vibrancy of Aboriginal communities.

• Recognize and respect the diverse culture, values, beliefs and uniqueness of Aboriginal communities.
• Promote direct, honest, ongoing and timely communications with Aboriginal communities
• Foster and encourage Aboriginal-focused employment, education and business development measures.
• Develop ongoing Aboriginal participation strategies in co-operation with Aboriginal organizations.
• Encourage awareness and understanding of Aboriginal issues.
