Welcome to Pipelines 101

Pipelines are the safest and most efficient means of transporting crude oil and natural gas from producing fields to refineries and processing plants and of distributing petroleum products and natural gas to the consumer.

During the past few decades, people in communities affected by proposed or existing pipeline industry activities have become increasingly involved in the decision-making process related to the development or operation of pipelines.

With this increased involvement has come increased knowledge. However, despite improvements in technologies and practices, there are still negative perceptions about potential health, social, safety, security and environmental impacts of pipeline construction and operation.

Pipelines 101 aims to offer balanced, factual information on Canada’s pipelines and pipeline industry.

We believe that when key stakeholders have convenient access to factual information about industry operations, they can make informed choices about industry activities that affect their communities, and ultimately influence policy decisions.
